Fine Today Shiseido, Shiseido Japan, Unicharm and Lion (4 Companies) Issue Declaration to Reduce Plastic Used in POP Promotional Materials

 Fine Today Shiseido Co., Ltd. (Representative Director, President and CEO: Tetsuo Komori) together with Shiseido Japan Co., Ltd., Unicharm Corp., and Lion Corp. will gradually change the plastic parts used in their point of purchase (POP) promotional materials*1 at retail stores and on sales floors to paper in efforts to reduce their use of plastic. Through their concerted efforts to reduce the use of plastics not only in products but also in promotional materials, the four companies aim to use their influence as leading manufacturers of products in the daily goods and cosmetics categories to contribute to the development of an environmentally-friendly society and industry as a whole.

■Background

 The four companies began collaborating on strengthening product displays and storefront maintenance functions through Japan Retail Innovation Co., Ltd., which was established in 2016 as a joint venture to carry out storefront maintenance at retail stores. In 2019, the four companies made efforts to improve transportation efficiency through the joint delivery of promotional materials in order to reduce their logistics footprint and business load on retail stores. The four companies then agreed to share their knowledge and work to reduce the amount of plastic used in promotional materials.



■Details of efforts

 The companies will prioritize their efforts by starting with targeted promotional materials that can be quickly replaced. From November 2021,*2 the hooks on hanging displays widely used in stores will be gradually switched from plastic to paper, and later clear plastic racks for displaying products, fragrance samples, set cases and hanging fixtures made of polypropylene will be replaced with items made from paper.

*2. The timing of efforts of the respective companies will vary slightly.


 The four companies will actively continue to make concerted efforts to reduce the amount of plastic they use to contribute to realizing a sustainable society, an objective which each company has positioned at the center of its management strategy.
